An important question, and there are a couple of easy ways to check the security of a website. Any site can say "secure transactions", but here's how you know for sure. In Netscape, on the lower left hand corner of your browser, you'll notice a small pad lock. If the lock is open, it's not secure. If it is locked, it is secure.
