The means through which Canadians access, view and interact with content on the Internet are constantly changing. In October, Netflix - an American online media streaming company - announced its entrance to the Canadian market. This announcement has subsequently prompted other; more traditional, media outlets to enter the online streaming business. Just recently Toronto based movie theatre giant, Cineplex, announced that it too will be competing for a share of the online streaming market in Canada. Portable DVD vendor Zip.ca; which currently offers a mail order DVD rental service as well as DVD kiosks at large retail outlets, also recently announced its entrance to the streaming media market in Canada amidst the Cineplex and Netflix move.
So what does all of this mean to Canadian Internet users? In short, it confirms a trend that is happening globally; more and more people are consuming media through online channels as opposed to the more traditional (hard copy) formats. Online media offer Canadians the convenience of purchasing, viewing and storing digital copies of movies, TV and music without having to leave the comfort of their own homes. In a country where temperatures hover at or below zero for a quarter of the year, I'm sure we can all appreciate this convenience.
With the continued popularity of this form of media consumption, providers of Internet access are noticing a trend on their Networks. Canadians are transferring more data over their Internet connections and this is leading to higher data transfer rates over the communications infrastructure. As an Internet Service Provider, Nucleus plays a pivotal role in ensuring that our customers have adequate access to the new media rich content now available online.
